About Us

Whixall History Group

This Group, in a very loose context, arose out of the Meres and Mosses initiative back in the autumn of 2013. Its objectives were/are simple:

  • to collect and collate any history, ancient or modern, relating to Whixall
  • to publish those findings on these pages in perpetuity
  • to lend advice and support to any individual to realise these aims

These pages will never be complete – some entries will be extensive while others will be just comments or notes – it will always be a ‘work in progress’. As new information comes to light it will be collated and incorporated into this site to make this a growing archive of Parish history. For the past, present and future residents of Whixall, this site is for you.

Who, where, why, what, when and how

Whixall is like an island which, as organisational boundaries have been redrawn over the years have only served to emphasize. There is no central ‘go-to’ facility, it’s history is scattered and dispersed throughout many libraries; for instance Shrewsbury, Stafford, Litchfield, Wrexham and Cardiff. Additionally there is a more social and personal history that sits in numerous cardboard boxes and the memories of individuals far and wide.

Please don’t wait to be asked or approached, if you have a ‘history’ contact us and we’ll place it here so it is not forgotten.

For the purposes of this site we take ‘Whixall’ to be that area which lies within the Parish Boundary (see under Maps). However there will be times, for completeness, when we stray outside of that limit. We will also include anything that relates to Fenn’s Moss, even though completely in Wales – as ‘the Moss’, in totality, has an integral position in the history of Whixall.
